In our rapidly changing world, traditional gender roles are evolving at a fast pace. The days of men working outside the home while women handle all household tasks and childcare are becoming a thing of the past. Though there is still progress to be made, striving for gender equality is key to moving beyond these outdated norms.
Recently, a Reddit user found himself in a tough spot when he invited his wife to join the men in his family for some social time. He was frustrated by the ongoing criticism his wife faced from the women in his family, who clung to traditional views about women’s roles. His mother even suggested that his wife should remain in the kitchen.
Despite his wife’s efforts to fit in, including trying to win over the other women with her cooking skills, she found it difficult to earn their approval. Even with her father-in-law trying to help, the situation didn’t improve. So, the husband decided to make a stand and asked his wife to spend time with him and the men instead of staying behind in the kitchen.
This move upset the other women, who felt that the wife should stick to her cooking duties. They expressed their discontent to the husband, insisting she return to the kitchen. The husband firmly disagreed, arguing that their harsh criticism was both unfair and unkind.
When his mother advised him to enforce traditional roles and keep his wife in the kitchen, he stood up for his wife, saying he was fed up with the negative treatment. He even suggested that they might reconsider visiting if things didn’t change.
This situation underscores the clash between holding onto traditional family expectations and moving towards a more progressive and respectful approach. The husband’s decision to support his wife and challenge these norms reflects a step towards achieving gender equality and fostering better family dynamics.

“Spend more time with us so we can treat you badly”: your wife wisely opted out
“Make her spend more time with us so we can treat her badly”: good job not falling for this one.
Be prepared that next up is an accusation that you are insufficiently masculine, which is garbage of course. But that’s their next logical lever.
Amazing that your mom will go to all this effort just to avoid being less of a jerk to your wife, and then she thinks you’re the one making it a big deal.
Keep up the good work. NTA
NTA…ugh my first marriage was into a traditional Polish family. Same thing, all the women are expected to cook, clean, and work full time…while the men adorn the couches. I moved away from my Western family to marry in the east. It lasted 5 yrs..of dealing with the matriarchal arrogance, the nasty remarks, the petty jealousies, the mean-spirited entitlement. Your wife is sweet & kind, I’m glad you are standing up to the female bullies. There is no place in real families for this catty behavior, hopefully with your dad’s help, both you & he can start changing things for the better.
