Woman Is Furious After Boss Expects Her To Donate PTO To A Coworker I was recently asked to donate some of my Paid Time Off (PTO) to a co-worker, and it’s left me feeling frustrated and upset.
Here’s the situation: My co-worker had a serious accident and broke their back, and their home and car were also badly damaged in recent storms. Because of these unexpected events, they’ve used up all their PTO and now need others to donate their PTO days to help cover their time off.
Our PTO system combines vacation and sick time, and it’s a use-it-or-lose-it policy, so any unused time doesn’t carry over to the next year. With this policy, it seems unrealistic to expect that anyone has extra PTO just sitting around, especially since people usually use their time off.
What’s even more frustrating is that our company makes millions of dollars each year. It wouldn’t hurt their budget at all if they gave additional PTO or some form of support directly to employees who need it. Especially since this co-worker has been with the company for 15 years. You’d think the company would step up and help them out more instead of relying on other employees to contribute.
To make things worse, their partner just finished cancer treatment, and they have multiple kids in college. This is a really tough time for them, and it feels very unfair that helping them out is being put on the shoulders of their co-workers instead of the company stepping up with a more generous solution.
Overall, this whole situation has made me feel very disillusioned with the company. It’s disappointing to see that, despite their financial success, they don’t have a system to properly support employees in crisis. It’s been a clear reminder of how undervalued and unsupported employees can feel, and it’s adding to my growing frustration with where I work.

“I have heard of people donating PTO, but my understanding is this commonly occurs in environments where people accrue PTO over multiple years. On that note, I am happy to donate any and all hours of my PTO that didn’t roll over from years past…”

They can donate my asshole. If they want people to be nice they should work with the employee for FMLA or other leave for their situation. Not rely on other employees to go without.
