AITA for Being Upset My Dress Was Taken to France Without My Permission?

After designing my dream wedding dress with a local designer, which cost five figures, she offered to fix and clean it after my wedding in September. When I dropped it off, she even celebrated with champagne, and she mentioned she’d be away in France for a workshop.

AITA for Being Upset My Dress Was Taken to France Without My Permission?

Recently, I saw photos online of a model wearing my wedding dress in France. I was heartbroken. The dress is deeply personal to me, and I never expected it to be worn by someone else, especially so far away.

I feel like my trust was broken, and I’m struggling with the idea that something so special to me is now being showcased on a stranger. I’m considering whether to tell her how hurt I am, and I’m unsure if I’m overreacting or if my feelings are valid. Would I be wrong to share my feelings with her?

AITA for Being Upset My Dress Was Taken to France Without My Permission?

After designing my perfect wedding dress with a local designer—an expensive, custom creation—I had her fix and clean it after my September wedding.

When I dropped off the dress, she celebrated with champagne and told me she’d be going to France for a workshop.

Recently, I saw photos online of a model wearing MY wedding dress in France. I was devastated. The dress was so personal and special to me, and I never imagined it would be worn by someone else, especially so far away.

I feel like my trust was broken and I am struggling with the idea of a stranger showing my cherished dress. I’m torn about whether to express my hurt feelings to her and wonder if I’m overreacting or if my feelings are justified. Should I tell her how I feel?

If she wanted photos for her portfolio, she should have A) asked OP’s permission to use some of her bridal photos, or B) asked OP’s permission to use it for a photoshoot. She may have been the designer but the moment money exchanged hands, she lost all rights to the dress. NTA.

If you have those photos you could probably report the dress as stolen. I don’t know if that would make the whole situation worse, and it may be worth just getting it back and then moving on, but it’s really unacceptable that she took it without your permission. You paid for it, it’s your property. NTA

Nothing in the contract. Literally the only contract we had was the quote to make the custom dress and when payments needed to me made.

I’m guessing I wasn’t the model for the shoot because I wasn’t in France 😂 (also the model is gorgeous!)

She had the workshop with photographer and model all ready to go at some French villa. Looking at the pictures on her IG, there’s no doubt the dress definitely fits me better 🙂

My main question since she is the designer: isn’t it possible she made a copy of your dress?

It’s pretty difficult to make a dress fit someone else without alterations.

Edit: NAH for how you feel but you would be the AH if you didn’t find out more information about what happened before making a decision on what to do.

The dress is yout properly so of course she should have asked if she wanted it show cased as her portfolio.

It sounds amazing! Could you post a pic? On imgur and send a link? I feel so curious!
