AITA for telling the school nurse she is not a dentist and reporting her? On Monday, my 7-year-old son came home without his front tooth. Although it was loose, it wasn’t ready to come out yet. He showed me the tooth in a small bag and said the nurse had removed it.
I was taken aback. I contacted his teacher, who explained that my son had been wiggling the tooth and mentioned it might soon fall out. The teacher had sent him to the nurse, expecting her to assess the situation and contact me if needed.
Instead, the nurse pulled out the tooth, which my son found painful and unsettling. When I spoke with her, I expressed that she overstepped her role. She said the tooth was very loose and she was concerned he might swallow it, but I questioned why she didn’t reach out to me first. She argued that her experience justified her actions, but I countered that her decision was unprofessional and caused unnecessary discomfort for my son.
I also discussed the matter with the vice principal, who confirmed that removing teeth is not part of a school nurse’s responsibilities and that she should have notified me. The vice principal was also frustrated that no note had been sent, which is standard procedure. She advised that I might have been a bit too forceful in my response.
