AITA for telling my girlfriend she needs to get a real job? I’m 31, and my girlfriend is 28. We’ve been together for six years and living together for the past two. She’s always loved comedy and used to do open mics since we met. She had a good sales job, but last August she quit to focus on comedy, promising she’d make it big within a year. I supported her decision because I earn a lot more and can handle our expenses.
Since quitting, she’s been doing Uber and DoorDash part-time but hasn’t made any money from comedy. She often complains about being broke, yet she works just a few hours a week driving and spends most of her time lounging around. I’m paying most of our bills, which has cut into my savings.
She sleeps in until noon and spends her days on TikTok and YouTube for “inspiration.” She also gets upset if I miss her late-night open mic performances, even after a long day at work.
Last night, I suggested she should consider getting a full-time job again while still doing comedy. I told her I was struggling with the finances and that it was unlikely she’d become a famous comedian soon. She was very upset, cried, and went to stay with a friend. She called me a jerk and hasn’t replied to my messages since.
So, am I in the wrong here?

I’m 31, and my girlfriend, who is 28, and I have been together for six years, living together for the past two. She’s always loved comedy and did open mic nights since we met. She had a steady sales job that paid well, but she quit last August to focus on comedy, saying she’d be able to make it big within a year. I was supportive, despite my doubts, since I earn significantly more and can cover our expenses.
Since quitting her job, she’s been making money through Uber and DoorDash but works only a few hours a week and hasn’t earned anything from comedy. Her complaints about being broke are constant, yet her effort in driving for Uber and DoorDash is minimal.
I’ve been covering most of the household expenses, which has affected my savings. She also sleeps in until noon after late open mics and spends her days scrolling through TikTok and YouTube for “inspiration.” She gets upset if I miss even one of her late-night open mic performances, even after long workdays.
Last night, I suggested she consider going back to a full-time job, while still pursuing comedy. I told her I was struggling to manage our finances alone and expressed frustration, saying she was unlikely to become a famous comedian and needed to be more realistic. She was hurt by my words, cried, and went to stay with a friend. She called me a jerk and hasn’t answered my calls since.
So, am I the bad guy here?

ESH, mostly her
Yes, she is clearly not putting in her fair share with work and bills and your frustration over having to handle most of the expenses while she pursues her comedy ventures is justified.
But you really lost steam towards the end. While I realize you make some good points that message got warped when you completely blew up and demeaned her.

Nta, but this is reddit so a thousand under achievers are going to attack you for daring to suggest that a 28 year old adult needs to be working full time in order to pay the bills.

what you said was really, really mean and over the top but your frustration is understandable. can’t come down on you too hard for snapping.

Well, at least she’ll have plenty of material for her next comedy routine…

NTA you didn’t deliver it kindly but you’re clearly frustrated and you put up with this for long enough
