Today, I hosted a workshop for pregnant women that focused on a variety of important topics, including tips for a healthy pregnancy and nutritional advice. The session was going smoothly, and everyone seemed engaged and appreciative of the information being shared.
Towards the end of the workshop, a CEO arrived. Seeing this as a wonderful opportunity to network and potentially establish future collaborations, I decided to strike up a conversation with her.
I was quite nervous because I knew this could be a significant chance to expand the reach of my workshops and possibly gain some valuable support or partnership. As we chatted, I noticed that her belly appeared a bit rounded.
Assuming she was pregnant, I thought it would be friendly and inclusive to invite her to join our future workshops. So, in my attempt to be welcoming, I said, “We’d love to have you join our next workshops for your baby.
To my surprise, she gave me an awkward smile and responded, “Thank you, but I’m not pregnant.”
At that moment, the atmosphere shifted, and there was a painfully awkward silence. I felt a rush of embarrassment and regret. I tried to steer the conversation to a different topic, hoping to recover from the mistake, but it was clear that the damage was already done. Despite my efforts to move past the awkwardness, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had made a significant blunder.
As I walked away, I couldn’t help but feel like I had blown a huge opportunity. I had hoped to leave a positive impression and perhaps lay the groundwork for future collaborations, but instead, I was left with a sense of disappointment and frustration. The whole experience was a stark reminder of the importance of being careful with assumptions and words, especially in professional settings.
