My aunt wants to name her twins Violance and Violet

My aunt is currently expecting twins, and though she’s thrilled, she hasn’t yet discovered whether they are identical or fraternal.

She’s also decided to keep their genders a surprise until the day they are born. She has a few names in mind, depending on what combination of genders she ends up with. If she has a boy and a girl, she’s set on naming them “Violance” and “Violet.” The name “Violance,” which is pronounced just like “Violence,” is quite unconventional.

However, my aunt has explained that it’s a deliberate reference to the viola that my grandmother used to play, creating a musical connection that she cherishes.

She believes the name is unique and has a deep personal meaning, even though it might raise some eyebrows. My aunt reassured me that if her son ever faces issues with the name, he could always go by “Lance” instead. As for the girl’s name, “Violet,” it’s a classic choice that complements “Violance” in her eyes.

If the twins are both girls, she’s planning to name them “Alyja” and “Avanue.” “Alyja” is pronounced like “Elijah,” and “Avanue” is pronounced like “Avenue,” as in the street. These names are equally unconventional, reflecting her desire to give her daughters names that stand out and carry a sense of individuality.

During our conversation, I was so preoccupied with gently suggesting alternative names that I didn’t even think to ask what she might name twin boys. My concern, particularly with the name “Violance,” lingers in the back of my mind.

While my aunt is certain that she’ll always love the name, I worry that her son might face difficulties later in life. Despite my reservations, she remains steadfast in her decision, confident that the unique connection to our grandmother’s musical legacy will outweigh any potential drawbacks.

My aunt is expecting twins and hasn’t found out if they’re identical or fraternal, nor has she decided on the genders until the babies are born.

If she has a boy and a girl, she plans to name the boy “Violance” to complement “Violet” the name is pronounced like “Violence” but altered to reference the viola, which my grandmother (her mother) used to play.

The situation gets even more complicated if she has twin girls; she wants to name them “Alyja” (pronounced Elijah) and “Avanue” (pronounced Avenue, like a street).

I didn’t inquire about names for twin boys because I was focused on gently steering her toward other options. I’m concerned that naming a boy “Violance” might lead to problems later on, though she believes he could just go by Lance if necessary. She insists she will always love the name Violance. What should I do?

These memes have been around for years and we don’t want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does not mean you found it “in the wild”.

The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. Violet is fine but Violence is dumb. Not sure who came up with the expectation that twins would get similar or rhyming names but it is stupid. Just give your kids names that don’t get them and you bullied.

Oh, that’s funny.

We have a dainty little 6lb cat named Violet who is just the sweetest.

Like she doesn’t even play fight with her siblings, she just wants to love and cuddle with them. And when they try to play fight with her, she gives them lovey looks and tries to head boop them and never raises a paw.

She is literally just the sweetest little thing.

So ofc we call her Violent Violet ironically.

Ask if you can call Violence ‘Thuggy’ or ‘Ruffian’ as a nickame. Maybe send pics of baby clothes with ‘lady killer’s printed on them and see if she gets the joke.

I know people say that it’s okay to give trahghideighs to dogs, but I’d even feel sorry for the poor pupper with THAT name.

And I know I misspelled it. Because everyone will.

I don’t think gently dissuading her will do. Tell her straight out that naming her som Violence is a bad idea, because that is how everybody will read it. And get help from other family members. Really. The kid is more important than auntie’s feelings.

The other names are bad too, but Violence is the worst.

I don’t know what’s worse. Tragedeigh or Violance.

Here are some points your aunt should consider. Can someone send them anonymously? lol

  1. I think it’s cruel to have a name like Violance while your twin has a pretty name like Violet. I knew a “Vance” from Australia (there are so many V-names out there!)
  2. imagine a substitute teacher reading the name out loud. “Alyja” could pronounce it as “Al-lee-juh”. I would personally read Violance as “Vi-oh-lance” because “violence” just doesn’t make sense for a name. 😭
  3. random/unplanned commentary: “Violence is not acceptable behavior” “Violence is never the answer”
  4. Obviously, Violance and Avanue are easy targets for jokes or puns (positive or negative)
