Man Loses Temper Over Phone and Hits Wife: Who’s to Blame?

As I write this, I’m lying in bed with my mom, who’s helping me sort through my thoughts and get some outside opinions.

I’m a 24-year-old woman, and my husband is 30. We’ve been together for three years and have been married for one. I’m using a throwaway account for privacy reasons.

About a week ago, my husband and I argued about his misplaced phone. I was in the shower when he lost it, and when I came out, he was having a meltdown, yelling angrily and asking where I had put it or if I had seen it.

I told him I hadn’t touched it and needed to get dressed. He was blocking the doorway, so I couldn’t open it. I asked him to move, and apparently, my tone upset him. He then shoved me into the room. I asked him to calm down and said I would help look for the phone after I got dressed. He demanded I hurry, and I retorted that it wasn’t my fault.

He then hit me on the mouth with the back of his hand. It didn’t cause much pain, but I was stunned. He referred to it as a “warning tap” due to my “attitude.” I immediately left and went to stay with my mom.

The following day, my brother helped me retrieve some of my things from our home. My husband questioned whether all of this was necessary, and I told him it was, given that he had abused me. He was shocked by the term “abuse” and yelled at me, claiming that using such a term could jeopardize his career. Although he downplayed the impact of his actions, that’s how I feel. He has sent multiple texts threatening divorce if I continue using that term or if I try to damage his career by mentioning it to someone influential.

Am I in the wrong for calling it abuse, considering mentioning it publicly, and potentially impacting his career?
