AITA for Choosing My Daughter Cat Over My Partner Allergic Son?

AITA for Choosing My Daughter Cat Over My Partner Allergic Son? In a tough family situation, a father (38) is caught between his daughter’s emotional needs and his partner’s son’s severe cat allergy. His 12-year-old daughter has been going through a lot after losing her best friend and adjusting to a new living arrangement due to custody issues. Her cat has become a key source of comfort for her during this difficult time.

On the other side, his partner (36) has a 10-year-old son who is allergic to cats. The partner suggests rehoming the cat to make weekends more comfortable for his son when they visit. The father, however, worries about how this will affect his daughter, as the cat is very important to her emotional well-being.

To find a solution, the father suggests building a separate in-law apartment for his partner and his son to use during their visits, ensuring they have a cat-free space. He even offers to pay for a temporary apartment while the new space is being built. But his partner is concerned that this might make his son feel unwanted in the main house.

The father is focused on his daughter’s emotional health, knowing that losing her cat could make her situation worse. Even with his attempt to create a separate living space, tensions remain high as they try to find a solution that works for everyone.

This situation shows the challenges of blending families and balancing everyone’s needs. The father’s commitment to his daughter’s well-being is clear, but finding a solution that makes everyone happy is still a work in progress. Open communication and understanding are essential as they navigate this difficult decision.

NTA Your daughter will likely have a very adverse reaction to getting rid of her pet for someone who visits twice a month…..he feels like his son is being excluded from the main house and won’t understand why, that he’ll feel unwanted

While that sounds bad, you are doing a lot to accommodate an issue that is not really your problem. Check to see if allergy medicine can be administered.

Really look at your situation, ask yourself if a 2 year old relationship is worth f***ing up your daughter’s well being. Sounds like the partner is making an ultimatum that is unfair at best.

NTA

Your partner is an AH. He is trying to make you prioritize HIM over your daughter and compromise zero. This is not about his son. It’s about him wanting you to choose him over her.

I’m sure he thinks the cat is a problem because it means you won’t be able to live together for a long time. I’d be careful about that cat disappearing one day while they visit.

And the kid can take medication for the allergies for the few days a month he visits.

NTA, that cat means a lot to her and for all you know this relationship may not last

Edit: Be careful, I wouldn’t be surprised if your partner tries to get rid of the cat. I’ve heard of it happening in situations similar to this on Reddit

NTA.

For a start – allergy meds exist. My own kidlet uses three different allergy meds so she can have cats at her dads house.

If allergy meds don’t work – you’ve offered two very viable solutions.

Please do not take away your child’s animal – she will see it as a betrayal and you preferring to please your partner over her emotional needs.

How about not having your partner move in then? They aren’t being very sympathetic to your daughter, and it just seems like moving in together is a bad idea. At least while the cat is alive.

NTA, you offered a very fair compromise that would keep everyone healthy. Maybe not perfectly happy, but healthy. Be cautious around this person though. Your daughter is in a vulnerable place, and this person has proven they don’t care about that.
